So I had this painting waiting for me to say it was finished. But something was wrong and I couldn't articulate what the issue was. So I followed some advice about painting walls that you hear all the time on DYI shows... paint a swatch on the wall that you are interested and look at the color at different times of day and typical lighting conditions to see if you still like the paint color in the room.
I took both panels of this painting into the room where they would be hanging to see that the painting would look like. Ugh! No really, they were too dark and the leaves looked brown and flat. Back to the studio! I took to the sky and worked up a lighter color and added more brightly colored leaves for the foreground sections. I will give this time to dry before viewing the painting in the room of interest again.
My art teacher Ana mentioned that you should paint as if your work will be viewed with horrible lighting. It should still have "impact" in low light. I am working on 'impact'. (I also need to work on focus, but that is for a different blog entry. :) )
