I have started, in preparation for my upcoming home studio art show, to look at "old" paintings with fresh eyes. I abandon all my paintings with typical feelings of "I like this". However, I sometimes revisit the works a "meh" response. What happened in the intervening weeks or months? Sometimes I feel that the paintings are "nice" (yes that is a four-letter word), but there's no "Pow!" no impact. What I am looking for is the spark that would stop a person as they glance at the work and entice a viewer to cross the room to get a closer, better look.
Of course this depends greatly on the tastes and mood of the viewer, but can I startle someone pausing for a moment?
What would stop you to look at a painting or other work of art? Size? Color(s)? Topic?
